Mesir Wot

Preparation: 5 min  › Boiling time: 8-10 min  › Ready in: 1 hour  Serves 4

 

Ingredients:

2 cups Red Lentils

1 medium onion (finely chopped)

1 teaspoons salt

5 garlic cloves (peeled and finely chopped)

1/3 cup cooking oil

3 Tablespoons Bebere seasoning (Available at Ethiopian Spice shops)

100 ml tomatoes, crushed

3 cups water

 

Method:

  1. Rinse Lentils in water.

  2. Place lentils in a bowl of water until needed.

  3. In a pot add oil, garlic and onion. Sauté until it starts to brown.

  4. Add Berbere seasoning and tomatoes. Mix well.

  5. Drain Lentils and add to the pot with 3 cups of water.

  6. Bring to boil and Stir frequently for 8 to 10 minutes.

  7. Place entire pot inside the EasyOven and leave for 2 hours

 

 

Serve with Traditional Ethiopian Injera bread or Pita bread, yoghurt (natural)

and potato and spinach.

Berbere

A chili and spice blend used to season many Ethiopian dishes. It has a wonderful rich and refreshing flavour.

 

Ingredients:

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek

  • 1/2 cup ground dried red chili

  • 1/4 cup paprika

  • 1 tablespoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Method:

Finely grind fenugreek seeds in an electric coffee/spice grinder. Stir together with remaining ingredients until combined well
